P3: DESCRIBE THE MULTI PLATFORM DISTRIBUTION METHODS
FM
Frequency Modulation - Provides high fidelity sound over broadcast radio, using VHF frequencies.
AM
Amplitude Modulation - Primarily for medium waves transmissions.
MW
Medium Wave - Part of the medium frequency radio band used mainly for the AM radio broadcasting.
DAB
Digital Audio Broadcasting - Digital radio standard for broadcasting digital audio services.
Advantages with DAB
Less Interferences - Reception quality should be to a high standard and as a digital transmission, DAB broadcasts should be free from the interference sounds, such as hissing and crackling, that can be heard on FM radio services.
Wide Coverage - DAB radios can automatically tune to all available stations and as they use the same frequency, DAB can broadcast nationwide through the country.
Disadvantages with DAB
Expensive - It is expensive to have the necessary equipment to produce DAB.
Poor Coverage - Many areas suffer from poor coverage or no coverage at all.
M2: EXPLAIN THE PROCESSES AND TECHNOLOGIES INVOLVED IN PRODUCING A RADIO BROADCAST
As part of our research, we visited Heart Radio Station. We got to see first hand how the station operated, the job roles and the type of equipment they use.
Equipment
Microphones
The microphones we saw in Heart Radio were positioned close to the presenter, to make sure the sound quality was radio broadcast standard. The mic has a red cover to reduce the 'pops'. when words with a strong 'p' is said, whereas some mics have a pop shield.
Headphones
Headphones are important as they allow the presenters to hear the quality of themselves and co-presenters, making sure that there is no hiss or other distortion. It helps measure the volume levels of songs and music beds or jingles.
Mixing Desk
Mixing desk is one of the most essential variable of a radio station. It houses the main faders for volume for songs that are played, as well as presenter's voice and jingles. It brings all the different instruments, music elements and pre-recordings together.
Work Station
The workstation houses the mixing desk, microphones, the computers, telephones and more. Without this, the radio show would not be able to moderate. At Heart Radio, the work station was very organised and equipment on the work station was position appropriately, allowing the radio presenter and producers to use when needed.
Speakers
Speakers are important as it projects the quality of the radio show as a whole, allowing everyone at the station to listen to how well the show sounds and if there is any issues.
Running Order (Digital Chart Wall) and Radio Clock
As seen in many radio station, Heart Radio also has a radio clock and a digital chart wall. This is crucial as it helps the show to broadcast on time and run smoothly. Presenters have to always be aware of the time, especially when counting themselves in or announcing the news.
